My Name Is Gyeryongsan

‘Gyeryongsan,’ born at the Hakbong-ri kiln sites in Gongju, has settled into GOBOKII’s space at 100 Gomisul-ro, Dongdaemun-gu — a new ceramics exhibition: “My Name Is Gyeryongsan.”
“Gyeryongsan” ware means the ceramics made around Gongju, South Chungcheong, in early Joseon. In the Korean antiques trade, buncheong with black iron painting over brushed slip is customarily called simply “Gyeryongsan.” The kilns drew attention early — looting was already rampant by the time of the first surveys — and after excavations in the 1920s and 1990s, the site is now a designated historic site of real importance.
This exhibition does not stop at the familiar iron-painted brushware. Stamped buncheong, white porcelain, black-glazed ware and small shards — the broad face of Gyeryongsan from the same kilns is gathered in one place, together with pieces lost after excavation and since returned, the original 1920s excavation reports, and the piece RM (yes, that RM) deliberated over — which ended up in GOBOKII’s keeping.
Setting aside the complications of history, we want to dwell on the vitality of ceramics that have endured for centuries — the nonchalant, steadfast trajectory of vessels that survived to the end, chipped and wounded. Visitors may handle the Gyeryongsan shards in the gallery with their own hands.
Yu Cheol-sang of the Joseon Ceramics Research Institute, who organized the exhibition, describes it as “an attempt to read the value inscribed in each vessel with today’s eyes and language, rather than simply following the classifications of the past.”
Yido Auction, Yu Cheol-sang, curator Goyo, and GOBOKII — a modest yet special exhibition prepared with care by a young generation of antiquarians. You are warmly invited.
