Joseon Book Bandaji (Front-Opening Chest)

Dark Wood Chest

A bandaji is a chest whose upper front panel swings down like a door — true to its name, which means "the half-closing one." The book-bandaji among them kept books and documents; to bear the weight of heavy volumes it was built of thick boards and bound with hand-forged iron fittings for extra solidity. The shape and proportion of those fittings, and the way the grain was worked, differed from region to region — Ganghwa, Bakcheon, Jeonju — so the name of a place became the name of a style. Black ironwork set against a solid wooden face, in measured contrast, is the strength of Joseon woodcraft. The bold grain of the front panel carries a deep patina laid down by time.

In a room today you can keep anything but books inside. Set white porcelain, a lamp or a tray on top and it becomes a console; hide the everyday clutter within. One piece alone gives a living room its centre of gravity. Opening from the front, it sits flush against a wall with ease, and its low height keeps the sightline open.

GOBOKII sees the bandaji as "a small piece of architecture for the home." The proportion of its solid face and black fittings settles a space beside any modern piece.
