Harper's Bazaar Korea | How to Hunt for Antiques in Dapsimni: Ko Bok-hee

In Search of Korean Beauty
“Hyung! As we’ve often discussed, just imagine how well our Joseon ceramics would complement Le Corbusier’s architecture or gardens. Just as Le Corbusier’s art is innovative, Joseon ceramics remain fresh and new to this day. The fact that our traditional crafts can still stand at the forefront of modern art—this is a profound truth. And it’s not just Joseon crafts that draw me in. As you’ve said, the ancient murals of Goguryeo are also a remarkable subject. I feel we must bring these things to the forefront.” An excerpt from a letter written in 1953 by painter Kim Whan-ki to architect Kim Jung-up is displayed in the window of Go Bok-hee’s home goods shop. Just as the artist said, they enjoy the subtle harmony itself by blending the old with the spaces, furniture, and accessories of the present era.
