Soapstone Brazier with Su-Bok Inscription — The Stone That Warmed Winter

곱돌 수복명문 화로 — 수(壽)·복(福)을 새긴 돌 화로

With the first cold arriving, we bring out an object for winter: a Joseon brazier carved from a single block of soapstone. Ring handles sit at the sides, and on the front and back faces the characters su (壽, long life) and bok (福, fortune) stand in relief.

Soapstone is soft to carve but strong in fire, and once warmed it holds heat long. So it was carved into braziers, pots and medicine kettles. Filled with embers and set in the middle of the room, the stone became a stove that stayed gently warm through the night. That someone carved long life and fortune even into a stone, wishing warmth to last — the thought itself is touching.

These days ours sits on a stack of books — a Joseon stone perched on Le Corbusier and Hiroshi Fujiwara, centuries apart in one frame, and strangely at ease. It has not forgotten its trade, either: it makes a fine incense burner, or a cachepot for a small plant.
