Kitchen Wall Lamp Stand — The Small Light over the Hearth

A wall-hung lamp stand that lit the kitchen: a long board with a cup carved in one piece at its front, a hole bored at the top for a straw rope. A humble perch for the small flame that lit the evening’s cooking by the hearth.
Decades of soot and handling have settled like lacquer, turning the whole body a deep black. The knife facets remain on the cup. There is not one decorated inch on it — and yet, hung on a wall, it is strangely sculptural.
Today it serves well as a wall sconce for a candle, or a wall vase for a handful of dried flowers. Set a small flame in the cup at dusk, and a century-old kitchen evening crosses over into the room.
