Blue-and-White Jar with the Character Su (壽) — A Small Jar of Long Life

A small blue-and-white porcelain jar from late Joseon. A neat fret band circles the shoulder, and on the round body, among blue flowering branches, the character su (壽) — long life — is written clear and bold.
Su-bok-gang-nyeong — long life, fortune, health and peace — was the blessing Joseon people most loved to put on their vessels: on rice bowls, on pillow ends, on jars like this, so the wish would seep into the user’s everyday. The hand here is less about formality than affection; warmth trails wherever the brush passed.
In December, as the year winds down, we move this jar to a visible spot — a bookshelf, a console, or inside a red-lacquered cabinet. Small as it is, that single character su gentles the air of a room. As a new-year gift in place of a greeting card, few objects do better.
